 Foccus is a relationship inventory for couples who are
planning to marry. Reflecting current knowledge about the key elements
of a successful marriage, Foccus helps couples learn more about themselves and their relationship.
The Marriage Matters project is based on the Foccus (Facilitating Open Couple Communication, Understanding and Study) scheme. Each partner is asked to read and respond to a number of statements. There are 156 statements in the basic inventory and a number of others geared towards specific issues such as second marriages or inter-faith relationships. The responses, combined with some biographical information about each partner, are computer processed to produce a relationship inventory report. Using the report, the facilitator works with the couple to look at patterns in their responses, discuss issues, and raise awareness of important relationship topics. The Foccus inventory highlights key problem indicators as well as areas of success in the relationship. It is not a pass or fail test, nor it is a predictor of success or failure in marriage. It aims to identify issues for couples to discuss and work through before marriage. Occasionally the couple may decide to make a referral for relationship counselling in order to address further the issues raised. Topic areas covered include: life style expectations; friends and interests; personality match; personal issues; communication; problem solving; religion and values; parenting issues; extended family issues; sexual issues; financial issues; readiness issues; marriage covenant; family of origin; dual careers. |
